Dear Friends,

When Jerry and I were first married we purchased a 30-foot RV. It was not a diesel pusher (big diesel engine in the back of the bus). It was a gas-fired engine (no computers in vehicles at that time) and the engine was between the driver and the passenger seats in the front of the vehicle. A big padded, insulated lid covered the engine. In those days Jerry was doing most of the driving and I usually sat perched on that lid next to him as we made our way around the western part of the United States. So much fun!

This vehicle had a very finicky points-system engine and it was constantly out of alignment, so a mechanic along the way talked us into replacing those spark plugs with an electronic ignition system. But that was not a good idea. The vehicle had much less go power and the gas mileage went way, way down. So eventually we found a mechanic (Joe Leonard) to restore the original spark plugs back into the vehicle. Joe was the only mechanic we could find that really knew how to calibrate that engine. So, we would drive several thousand miles and the engine would get more and more out of tune, and we would then we make our way back to Joe. He would make some adjustments in the big garage where he worked and then he would get into the RV with us and while we were driving down the highway, he would lift the padded lid and tune the engine as we were driving. It was exciting and LOUD and always successful. We got higher performance, a smoother ride, and much better gas mileage. He knew just what to do. We visited Joe at least twice a year. One day we sent him a gigantic telegram. One-foot tall letters and 20 feet long banner. It said, “To Joe Leonard, the greatest mechanic in the world.” When we saw him next we ask if he had received our telegram. He grinned and said, “Yes, but the other mechanics don’t like it.” He took us into the garage and there it was stapled up all along one wall where you could not miss it.

As I have been applying Abraham’s latest process (the Inactive Box) the last two weeks by being keenly aware of my emotions and then deliberately deciding to release any thoughts when negative emotion is present, I have put many, many, many cards in my Inactive Box. It surprised me that I am discovering so many things that need tuning. And then I thought about our engine that always needed to be tuned, and Jerry’s guitar that always needed to be tuned, and our pianos! And then I thought, “If I am going to continue to travel down the highways (and I am) then continual tuning is the most natural thing in the world. Abraham’s words from the very beginning of our interaction has been, “You cannot get it wrong, and you never get it done.”

Okay by me. I don’t mind the tune-up. I like higher performance (eagerness) smoother ride (happy) and better gas mileage (vitality).

We’re going to be tuning up together some more, this coming Saturday. If you would like to join us, click here!

Our Love,
Esther
(and Abraham and Jerry)
