Dear Friends,

I said to Jerry often, “Let’s go get a coke and pretend like we are on vacation.” He would laugh and usually, we would get in the car, go to a drive-through restaurant window, get a coke, and then take a short drive in the attitude of enjoying the moment. When we first got married we went, nearly every day, to a hotel that overlooked a marina. There were several rows of overstuffed, purple chairs that were stacked 4 or 5 rows high (sort of like in a movie theater). We were usually the only people there. We would get something to drink, and sit, and talk, and appreciate the beauty of that space and the moment. Long after that place was remodeled and those purple chairs were replaced with other things, we would often say to each other, “let’s go find some purple chairs,” meaning, let’s go find a place to bask and appreciate our lives.

Those kinds of places are everywhere, but, I now understand, that the magic of those moments, was our intention to turn our attention to our good-feeling thoughts. I now understand that the reason those experiences felt SO VERY GOOD, was because we were deliberately intending to carve out a piece of time to do something very intentional — To feel good! And while I’m always looking for “purple chairs” (and they are everywhere) I’m getting really good at intending to feel good and then focusing in a way, toward something, that does!
